ERRIN

The European Regions Research and Innovation Network

ERRIN

In 2001, an informal platform was established to facilitate the participation of individual regions in the European Research Area. In 2007, it was replaced by a now formal non-profit association under Belgian law (the so-called ASBL) - ERRIN. It currently has about 120 members. These are mainly European regions and scientific institutions, including several Polish regions. The network cooperates with representatives of the European Commission and the European Parliament.

Network mission:

  • knowledge exchange at EU level,
  • supra-regional exchange,
  • knowledge development among regional practitioners,
  • development of research and innovation strategies and themes,
  • cooperation with other networks and organisations involved in research and innovation.

Following an analysis of the international cooperation networks operating in Brussels in terms of their offer of membership, the region joined the ERRIN network in 2016 with the decision of the Lower Silesian Regional Assembly.

There are currently 13 thematic working groups within the ERRIN network. Participation in their work is open, which means that participation in individual groups can be shaped according to the real needs of the region. Each group meets on average 3-4 times a year.

The Marshal Office of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship of these groups,  is involved in the work of 8 of them:

  • smart specialisation,
  • science & education for society,
  • innovation & investment,
  • bioeconomy,
  • smart cities,
  • energy & climate change,
  • design & creativity,
  • tourism & cultural heritage.

Since the beginning of its membership in the ERRIN network, a key role has been played by the Regional Office of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship which participates in meetings of selected working groups and whose findings are communicated to the region on an ongoing basis. Together with the Regional Office of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship, the work of the network is monitored by representatives of the Economic Development Department in the Economy Department of the Marshal Office of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship, disseminating the information obtained to their network of contacts.
